Petitioning State Legislatures

Petitioning State Legislatures

by Dominic MacAulay

If you are like me, then you have grown sick and tired of your Governor locking down your state and preventing you from living life as usual. Our Governors have usurped the power We the People gave them and have used it against us. Our small, privately owned businesses are struggling to stay in business. The people of America have been wrongly convinced that they are legally required to wear masks wherever they go. Such deviance has compacted a furious separation between people who once coexisted in friendship.

We have become trapped in a state of complacency. Yes, we want things to go back to normal. Yes, we feel the urge to just throw off the bonds that have been placed on us. Yes, we may voice our opinions on our social media outlets. Yes, we may have even protested in front of the capitals. But, we nevertheless feel like there really is nothing effective to be done. Nothing ever changes.

Allow me to introduce a revolutionary concept.

Consider a situation where we the people could elect someone among us to be the face of our legal wishes. Furthermore, let's say that these people we would appoint had actual power over the political environment and could, in fact, make a concrete law stating that our Governor will never have the authority to make emergency mandates or simply overturn his mandates on the basis that he never had the power to do so in the first place. Can you imagine the impact that would have in our States and America as a whole?

Well, allow me to introduce you to your State Legislative Branch. Yes, as I'm sure you've already guessed, the above listed concept has been around since the founding of America. Your State Senate and House of Representatives have had the power to put your Governor back in his executive position for over two hundred years!

Article I, Section 1 of the U.S. Constitution very clearly and succinctly states, "All legislative Powers herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the United States, which shall consist of a Senate and a House of Representatives." This of course means that, if anyone has the power to overrule your Governor's outlandish encroachment of authority, it is your State Congress!

I implore you to petition your Representatives and Senators to realize their power and use it in defense of the Constitution they swore to protect and ultimately your basic rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Write emails. Send personalized letters. Do whatever you can to captivate their attention. If peaceful protesting to your Governor resulted in no effect, then the legal action of Congress will.
