Why Didn’t Dr. Dobson Tell Karl Rove No Support For Miers Or ANY Judicial Nominees Unless They Oppose ALL Abortions, Overturn Of Roe v. Wade?

Well, Dr. James Dobson has finally told us on his radio show what Karl Rove told him about Harriet Miers. But, what is most disturbing is what Dr. Dobson did not tell Rove. In his most recent broadcast about Miers, he said, about his conversation with Rove:

DR. DOBSON: WHY Is Asking About Slaughter Of Millions By Abortion A Taboo Topic?DR. DOBSON: WHY Is Asking About Slaughter Of Millions By Abortion A Taboo Topic?
“We did not discuss Roe v. Wade in any context or any other pending issue that will be considered by the Court. I did not ask that question. You know, to be honest, I would have loved to have known how Harriet Miers views Roe v. Wade. But even if Karl had known the answer to that and I’m certain that he didn’t, because the President himself said he didn’t know, Karl would not have told me that. That’s the most incendiary information that’s out there and it was never part of our discussion.”

But, why would Dr. Dobson not even ASK about where Miers stands on abortion? In a previous broadcast, he spoke eloquently and movingly about how, if he was wrong by endorsing Miers, “the blood of those [unborn] babies that will die will be on my hands to some degree and that’s why it has weighed so heavy on me, and why I don’t take this step lightly [of endorsing Miers].”

Dr. Dobson also said: “There’s no way to put in into words…the burden of how this decision about this nominee weighs me down in ways that I don’t recall experiencing before, because if I make a mistake here and others make a mistake what we’re talking about are babies – we’re talking about millions of babies! If this nominee is the wrong person, I mean for twenty or thirty years it will reverberate and will change this nation forever….I recognize the gravity of that.”

But, if Dr. Dobson is worried about the shedding of the blood of millions of unborn babies, and this issue does weigh heavily on him – and I believe it does — how could he not at least ASKED Rove where Miers is on the abortion issue?

Better yet, since Dr. Dobson is so concerned about the abortion issue, why would he not tell Rove that unless he saw some solid evidence that Miers is against all abortions, and would vote to overturn Roe v. Wade, THAT HE CANNOT AND WILL NOT SUPPORT HER?!

And it’s interesting that in Dr. Dobson’s most recent broadcast he says one of the people Rove suggested he speak with – and he did — about Miers is her long-time personal friend Texas Supreme Court Justice, Nathan Hecht. In numerous national media interviews, Justice Hecht has said that Miers’ Christian faith will have nothing to do with her judging cases and if it did, this would be wrong.

In a CBS “Early Show” interview (10/6/05), Justice Hecht was asked how Miers’ Christian faith has “shaped her views on these very important issues that she would face on the Supreme Court.” He replied: “Well, it shapes the kind of person that she is. It doesn’t shape her view on cases. In fact, almost the opposite is true. Someone who is very committed to their faith is also going to be committed to the oath that they take as a judge and is not going to – is going to judge cases fairly and is not going to let personal or religious views or any other kind of views influence the decisions is actual cases.”

This same day, on the NBC “Nightly News,” Justice Hecht said: “If Harriet is as sincerely religious as she says she is, then it would be a violation of all those principles to let them dictate how she’s going to rule on a case.”

In an interview on “National Public Radio,” also on this same day, Judge Hecht said about Miers and her Christian faith: “You can’t extrapolate from the fact that someone is pro-life what they’re going to do in a particular case. I mean, it’s one thing to have a personal conviction that this is the way you ought to live your life, and it’s another to say, ‘This is what the Constitution says.’ They’re just not the same.”

Since Justice Hecht believes what he says, and is most likely reflecting the views of Harriet Miers, I see no way that Dr. Dobson’s conversation with him could encourage him in any way re: his endorsement of Miers.

In fact, in an interview with me, Harriet Miers Pastor, Dr. Barry McCarty of the Valley View Christian Church in Dallas, Texas, says he is “disappointed” by and has to “disagree with” the just-quoted views of Justice Hecht. Responding to what Justice Hecht has said, Pastor McCarty said he knew about this and “yes, I was disappointed and would have to disagree with those comments.” He added that he has “consistently” told all the members of his church “that their Biblical beliefs need to touch all of their life.”

Pastor McCarty agreed that Miers must not divorce her faith from her work as a judge because Jesus Christ is, indeed, King of kings, Lord of lords and has ALL power in heaven and on earth.

Finally, in Dr. Dobson’s most recent broadcast, he said Karl Rove told him re: Miers “that she had taken on the American Bar Association on the issue of abortion and fought for a policy that would not be supportive of abortion, that she had been a member of the Texas Right to Life.” The implication here is that because of her having “taken on” the ABA Miers is anti-abortion.

But, this is not true. Several press reports have said that what Miers did had nothing to do with whether abortion is right or wrong. She simply wanted the ABA to be neutral on abortion because the issue is divisive and was costing the ABA members.

It is also not true that Miers is a member of Texas Right to Life. She did, however, give $150 to the “Texans For Life Coalition” in 1989. In an interview, Kyleen Wright, the head of “TLC” who has been active in pro-life for 30 years, told me, about Miers:

“No one who’s still around and involved knows her or knew her. And the other pro-life and pro-family people I’ve talked to in the state don’t know her. She wasn’t one of us and didn’t work with us….she’s not on our mailing list.” She adds that the $150 donation by Miers is the kind of gift office-holders and candidates gave to get their names in the group’s program. She was on city council in 1989. Wright says: “We all want to believe President Bush made a good choice but we are very nervous.”
