…Because They Are Not Americans…

Recently I had the honor of delivering an address at the graveside of an American martyr. His name was Captain Henry Wirz. Born in Zurich in 1822, he was executed on November 10, 1865 and is buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Washington, DC. My purpose here is not to tell the story of Henry Wirz but I do encourage you to learn it.

As part of my address, I emphasized the importance of recovering the American understanding – THE AMERICAN VIEW – of law and the role of civil government. As you might know from even the most cursory view of our website, we emphasize the need to recover a working knowledge of this view so that we can understand what the forms and institutions of our federal system should look like and the principles on which it was intended to operate.

It comes down to this: Our country owes its existence to an Almighty, Omniscient, Everlasting and Sovereign God of the Universe. We have rights which are unalienable because they have their origin in Him. And the reason d’etre of civil government is to wield the sword in defense of these God-given rights.

After my remarks a very sincere gentleman approached me and asked me if I could answer a question for him. He carried with him a book that he had been reading which he said had recently opened his eyes to the myth of the separation of church and state and to other things that he heretofore had assumed to be true but was now reexamining. Though he was in his late sixties, he was full of an eager desire to learn and discuss and question some long-held false presuppositions.

He prefaced his question by saying that he had asked this particular question of representatives of both major parties and also listened to the statements of Mr. Bush and his opponents in the media with out hearing a satisfactory explanation to his query.

I told him I’d take a shot at it.

Here’s what he asked: Why won’t President Bush defend our borders or take any meaningful action to halt illegal immigration? For that matter, why won’t those who oppose him speak to this issue or offer a plan to protect America from this obvious invasion of our country?

I said I’d try to answer him in just a few sentences. He waited anxiously. I began carefully.

“You remember, sir, that in my remarks today, I stressed the point that America was founded on a creed – a system of beliefs? And it’s the adherence to that creed – that belief system – that really makes you an American. Remember my claim that it’s not geography (where you were born or where you are now) that makes you an American. It’s certainly not a social security number that makes you an American. It’s not a driver’s license or a passport or any futuristic biochip placed under your skin that makes you an American…”

“What makes you an American,” I reminded him, “is what you BELIEVE!” And your beliefs affect and determine the way you think. And the way you believe and the way you think determine how you will act.”

“So,” I concluded, remembering my promise to be brief, “the reasons they won’t act to protect American borders is that they ARE NOT AMERICANS!”

His eyes widened. It was a very new idea for him to think that the President of the United States was not an American. But as I watched his face I received a great sense that a brand new way of seeing things had just taken hold.

“Of course,” he began. “Yes…of course”. “Sure…”

After a moment, he continued, “Well, that explains a whole bushel of other things, too, doesn’t it?”

“Yes, it does,” I agreed.

Once you accept the clear evidence and the open declarations of leaders in both major parties that their allegiance is not to American beliefs, then you can understand that their allegiance is not to America itself. During the last election, both Mr. Bush and Mr. Kerry indicated over and over that their allegiance was to a new world order – an internationalist agenda that supersedes and countermands their supposed allegiance to these united States and to their oath of office.

It’s hard to articulate my excitement in watching this gentleman respond to my words in a way that indicated that the “prism” had been slightly but significantly “turned” for him and that he now saw the white light separate into its respective and brilliant colors. My bet is that, like a growing number of other men and women in our land, he will never see white light again.

May God restore and bless our American Constitutional Republic.
