I DON’T CARE…
If our First Lady may have breached protocol by some of the ways in which she made physical contact with Queen Elizabeth. And I do not care despite the fact that, as I have read, “media outlets” covering this event were “abuzz” re: this very topic. In fact, part of the reason I do not care about this topic is precisely because “media outlets” are “abuzz” with this topic. I mean, it’s not like our First Lady grabbed the Queen, put her in a headlock and gave her multiple noogies a la Bill Murray and Gilda Radner in that skit on the old “Saturday Night Live” show. If, however, our First Lady had done this, she would get no complaint from me. The Brits were, after all, a while back, extremely rude to us. First Lady, Queen Reach Out and Touch
AOL
(April 2) — Media outlets covering Barack Obama’s first major trip abroad since becoming president are abuzz with a big question: Did first lady Michelle Obama breach protocol by putting her arm around Britain’s Queen Elizabeth?
The Obamas met the monarch and her husband, Prince Philip, at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday. The Associated Press reports on how the two couples exchanged gifts — the Obamas gave the queen an iPod, and the royals gave signed portraits of themselves to the Obamas.
It is usually a protocol no-no to touch the queen of England. But after Queen Elizabeth II put her hand on Michelle Obama’s back during a reception at Buckingham Palace in London Wednesday, the first lady responded in kind.
But the bigger headline came out of the reception that Buckingham Palace threw for leaders attending the G-20 summit in London. It was there that Elizabeth rested her hand on Michelle Obama’s back. A moment later, the first lady reciprocated.
The small gesture spawned this headline in the Times of London: “Protocol is abandoned as Michelle Obama cozies up to queen.”
