Bobby Franklin’s Georgia Journal: Medicine, “Natural Rights,” Mortgage Licenses, More Fiscal Irresponsibility
REP. BOBBY FRANKLINThere were several interesting bills taken up by the Georgia House of Representatives last week. One bill, HB 942, was one of the most blatantly un-American bills that I have seen in my 12 years in office. The bill actually begins in Section 1 by declaring “that the practice of medicine is a privilege granted by the people acting through their elected representatives and is not a natural right of individuals.” They missed the boat twice on this one. First, individuals do not have any natural rights — which transitions to the second point: rights are given by God and are not privileges handed out by the state. It is very dangerous when those elected to office begin to believe and govern as if the State is God.
Another interesting bill was HB 921, a bill to allow Georgia to enter into a national mortgage licensing scheme. Since a lawful calling is a right granted by God, the civil government does not have any jurisdiction to limit that calling with a licensing scheme. While those proposing the bill were seeking to keep “bad actors” out of the mortgage industry, it was pointed out at the sub-committee and full committee meetings that the free market is a far superior regulator of industry than any government agency could ever dream of becoming. HB 921 passed the House with only 1 dissenting vote.
Finally, on Friday the House passed HB 989, the mid-year budget adjustment. Well, it’s always been called a mid-year adjustment but in reality all it is is appropriating any surplus. The problem is that any new program begun with this new money receives entitlement status for continued spending in future budgets. There were only six of us who said that this is not fiscally responsible. The surplus was $332,000,000. To me that’s a lot of money. Obviously not to these free spenders.
The duty is ours …
the outcome is God’s
