I like to compose replies that take more than a few minutes. Often my replies are in progress for twenty minutes or more, due to the research I engage in for sources, etc. This site logs me out after a short time of "inactivity" creating the need to "log in" again. Anybody else feel a little frustrated with this?

Yes, this can be frustrating, but it's a security issue. Several members compose in programs other than the forum editors and just log-in to post. That's actually a good way to work, b/c it *can cut down on flippant, less-considered posting.
I think this time is adjustable, so if I can find the preference, I'll adjust it a bit.

I post on other forums, and no one else bumps me out so quickly. Is it really necessary to have it set up this way? Logging in is a distraction for me when I have been writing a PM or doing some research for a post...
It just seems unnecessary...

If you check "Remember Me" by your name when you log in, I don't think you will have to log in over and over. I don't have the same problem; but I have that checked.
Let me know if that does what you're looking for.
