There are only text links in the XML, so both iPodder and iTunes show no downloads available, although all 16 are available from the page.
Or will only new shows be podcast?

The xml files would have to be used from your mp3 player - the iTunes Music Store is running the xml feed quite nicely: Here is the feed from Apple (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=75512877) - this link requires iTunes. Other players may read the xml link (http://www.theamericanview.com/podcasts/theamericanview.xml) directly
I don't think you can just open the url, but rather you must subscribe via a player that supports Podcasting. If you don't see "Podcasts" in your Source window in iTunes, you may not be running version 4.9, which you need.
There are currently 15/16 and 1-4 available via the Podcast Part of the fun of Podcasting is getting a new episode automatically, so we're going to deliver them a bit slower.

Ok, I have a question... I have an MP3 player, it's not an Ipod (1st Gen Dell DJ). Can I use Podcasts? If so, would you please tell me step by step how? This is new to me.
Thanks,
Matt H.

The functional part of the Podcast really has more to do with your computer and its MP3 player - like iTunes, Winamp, Sonique or iPodder - than it does your portable player.
If you current setup allows your computer to manage your music and automatically updates your DJ, then all you need to make sure is that your current computer based MP3 application supports Podcasting. If it does, then it will download the broadcasts (or let you tell it to) - and in the course of normally updating your DJ, The American View Radio shows will (like all your music) be copied over.
Podcasting requires the player (not your DJ) to read an .xml file on our server. Apple hit a homerun with it's Music Store and Podcasting. They take your xml file - in fact, they simply take the link - and they present your Podcast very professionally. So, I'm going to constantly push iTunes for that reason, and the reason that after using many Windows players for many years, have concluded iTunes is a superior music/file manager. But that's another thread.
I am not sure if your DJ is supported by iTunes - not all players are. In fact, most aren't. So iTunes is pointless if it won't sync with your player - all you need to do is get another app - something like iPodder.
If other Podcast subscribers are enjoying our Podcast, please let us know what combination of apps/players you are using.

I didn't want to go to the iTunes music store and didn't know it was required.
I copied the XML directly into iTunes and it didn't work (windows - I might try mac when I get home). It also didn't work with iPodder (a podcast app).

iTunes music store is not required if you have an mp3 player that can take the xml feed - but I'm not sure yet what those are. The music store is largely by-passed just by using the direct link to the feed through Apple. You go right to the Podcast.
I'm still working on other locations from which to "broadcast" the Podcast.

The Mac version of iTunes supports many brands of mp3 players and even some that don't even mention Mac compatibility on the package.
The Windows version however only supports the iPod directly.
However, I do have a friend that used a SanDisk mp3 player with iTunes though he has to manually add the tracks.
If your portable music player supports "drag and drop" via the windows explorer or the Macintosh finder, you can simply drag files from the iTunes window over the icon in either the finder on a Mac or the icon in "My Computer" on windows.
THat will copy the file to the portable player and it should work as long as your player supports adding songs that way, which a lot do.
If you do not have a player but you are looking to get one, by all means go for the iPod as you will have the least amount of problems and they are now down to $69 so they are much more affordable.
