Forgetting, evidently, that there is such a thing as video tape, all the world now knows that Pat Robertson recently called for the assassination, the murder, of Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez -- though he, at first, denied this, then apologized.

I agree in principle with the General here. I believe it is wrong to assassinate the leaders of any country with whom we are not at war. Assassinations of this type are indeed murder and violate the 6th Commandment. Also, I am no fan of Pat Robertson - I think he is blindly loyal to the GOP.

That being said, for clarification purposes, I must state that there are instances where killing leaders is justified, and that is when our nation is at WAR with another nation or group. In that case, I believe taking out the enemy leaders is biblically acceptable and justified. I am talking about a "Just War" situation.

And it has happened before. For example, our forces took out Admiral Yamamoto in 1943 - eighteen P-38 Lightnings attacked his airplane and escort and shot him down over the Solomon Islands. He didn't have a chance. Although Yamamoto was a military figure, he was not on a combat mission when he was killed.

In our day, Israel has taken out several leaders of Hamas by assassination (mostly by air to ground missiles). Israel is at war and is fighting for its very survival. Under those circumstances, I believe that killing key enemy leaders is biblically justified. In a Just War, such acts are survival and self-defense.

Nations have different roles than individuals. Nations conduct Just War. We tried to take out Saddam Hussein and his sons in the initial stages of the Iraq War.

I believe most Christians need a close biblical study of Just War. People are very confused in this area. I would definitely like to hear Mr. Peroutka or Mr. Baldwin or Mr. Lofton speak to this very pertinent and timely topic.
