I just watched the Social Security reform section from the Young Republicans National Convention on CSPAN. The fist thing I noticed was that there were only about 20 people in attendance at the presentation. But I must admit they did bring a good issue. "What are we going to do with Social Security? Do you think it needs to be changed? And if so, when, how, and by whom?" This did get me wondering how some of you feel about it. I personally feel that something does need to be done differently for people that are currently in the age group 18-39 to see any benefits later in life. What do you think?

I am 38. I have worked and paid into Social Security every year since I was 16. If I knew then what I know now I would have opted out and stuck it all in a stock account. I am planning my future as though I will not get Social Security.

Can you imagine what conservatives would say if a politician came up with Social Security today? They would be branded with the same iron used on Hillary when she promoted socialized health care. Since it's been around forever, we accept it.

The right thing to do is to wind Social Security down. That, however, will be almost impossible since we have created a culture of dependency in regards to retirement.

It needs to be wound down systematically and over a reasonable period of time.

It is a socialist program of dependenacy. We also need to teach the children how to fend for themselves and be self-sufficient. Churches, social groups, etc would be far more efficient to do this.

Yes, anyone that's going to rely on Social Security for their retirement is simply living in Disney World. Welfare is also a part of that "culture of dependency." It has created multiple generation families that live off of the government. So what do you do? Well I think you have to teach people to fish (or bag groceries or whatever) and then make them fish. To the government... how in the world can creating dependant people make you proud of yourself??? Wait... let's do more... let's give them free housing as well. Boy that's really good, free food and free housing (or as close as you can get). Hey, can't that be seen as buying votes? If someone comes along and says I'll give you free food and a free house wouldn't you vote for them?

No

That would immediately disqualify them. Unless they were offering to pay out of their own pocket.

Sorry, I should have said... If you vote for someone because they tell you they are going to give you free food and housing wouldn't that be buying votes? That's really what I meant. :)

you all are so right, we cannot have a government that sets up a further system of dependency.

The Democrats want to keep Social Security (socialism) and the Republicans (or at least Bush) want to give people the option of private accounts (corporatism). I agree that it should be eliminated altogether. And I think that in order for some people to accept it, it must be done gradually instead of all at once.

HAHA here in Baltimore, the only thing the liberals havent done is offer free cheese with every vote. I happen to know that they did, however, offer free beer.

If I liked the taste of beer, I would move to Baltimore!

If someone comes along and says I'll give you free food and a free house wouldn't you vote for them? Someone else will see the food and the house but the money to pay for it will come out of your pocket.
